Today started with a 25 minute drive to the city of Delft. We toured Royal Delft Museum. The clay that delft pottery is made from is 10 different ingredients mixed together to create the clay. Molds are made from plaster as it helps draw out the moisture from the clay. The molds are filed with the clay mixture. Once it is set it is removed from the mold and is fired turning it from a brown to a white biscuit, now it is ready to paint.

The pottery is painted with cobalt blue which looks black until it is fired in a kiln turning it into a vibrant blue. The last step is to apply a glaze.

We visited Kinderdijk, a UNESCO site to see how the Dutch tamed the waters and established land below sea level. There was a series of 15 windmills and dikes that worked together to remove the water to form usable land. We got to see inside 2 working windmills, saw how the men who manned the windmills and their family lived. It was a very windy day so the windmills were rapidly turning. The wing span is about a hundred feet. An incredible sight to stand near them and watch the blades rotate.

We made a quick stop on our way back to our apartment at McDonald’s as they have Bitterballen on their menu.

Also had to have another round of truffle mayo fries from a nearby stand.
