We had a delightful day, we visited a canal boat museum at Ellesmere Port. It explained all the history behind canal boats, had interactive displays of everything involved in moving goods up and down the canals. It was very interesting to see how it all worked. The use of the canals allowed considerable more goods to be moved on the water than on land. There were paths along the side of the canals that the horses walked along pulling the barges. If the barge had to go through a tunnel the men would unhook the barge, lay on their backs and use their feet to walk the boat from the tunnel roof through. Once through the horses would then be hooked back up and continue on the journey

We also enjoyed a nice trip down a canal on a barge. We got to see a few resident swans, the guide was saying that one of the people that works at the museum feeds the swans and if he is late feeding the male comes and knocks at the door. We lost track of time and ended up staying a bit past closing time but thank goodness we didn’t have to spend the night.

We then travelled on to Wallasey and walked along the promenade. We saw the skyline of Liverpool across the bay, the ferry that we will be taking to the isle of Mann, Fort Perch Rock which was built to protect England from France invading their coastal lines.

Spent a bit of time enjoying watching the dogs play on the beach and had some creamy ice cream.

Looks like we are a little ways from home.😂
