Scotland has a long history of transporting goods and people through canal systems. The used very large horses to pull the barges along the canals. They used Clydesdale and Lanark breads. Once the railroad came the canals fell into disrepair. Scotland got to work to reopen the canal systems for recreation use. The Falkirk Wheel was the solution for the canals in the upper areas meeting up with the lower region canals. It is the only one in the world. To test the model they made the design in Lego. The wheel has two compartments with equal weight water. The boat floats into the top and bottom containers. The wheel is started and the boats are rotated. We went on the boat tour, it took 50 minutes for the whole tour but the boat rotating only took 5 minutes. Once we were done we got to see swans with their babies. I personally think the ugly duckling got a bad rap, they are very cute as babies.

Next stop of the day was The Kelpies , it is a 95 foot welded monument. It is dedicated to all the horses that worked everyday pulling all the canal boats up and down the paths. These massive statues get lite up at night.

Last stop was The Callendar House. It was also used in the filming of Outlanders. We stopped for a cup of tea in the drawing room, toured the house and checked out the kitchen where the show was filmed.
